Many workplaces offer lots of opportunities to learn. From entry-level assistants learning to run reports to CEOs shepherding new products to market, how well people absorb new information is highly dependent on their motivation levels.

Researchers found that peoples’ motivation to learn is higher when they see a performance by another person that they perceive to be more exceptionally successful than just a “normal” achievement, according to an Academy of Management Discoveries article. The reverse proved to be true, too. Motivation to learn is also higher when people perceive another person’s performance as more of a failure, as opposed to a “normal” success.
